Oak Leaf Vineyard:

At the prestigious Florida State International Wine Competition this month, a new brand, Oak Leaf Vineyards from California, has won gold. With 84 wineries competing in Chardonnay category, only four received gold medals and Oak Leaf was the biggest bargain by far, at $1.97 suggested retail price in California and $2.97 in most other states.

Alice White

Recently I have found a bottle By Alice White made with a grape called Lexia. I have had Alice White Red Lexia and Alice White Lexia. These wines are both great cheap wine choices for social events. I would highly recommend them!

[...] The questions now are, “How many more major retailers who sell wine will be looking for an inexpensive brand to feature,” and “Will the present glut of wine grapes eventually run out and send prices skyrocketing?” We are sure that there must be many retailers who will wish to capitalize on this trend. No matter, it looks like for the time being, the public will be the real winners in this one. From News-Leader.com Over all it seems that Charles Shaw “Two Buck Chuck” Finally has some competition. When I first saw the display at our local WalMart, I had misgivings about buying a $2.97 bottle of wine. But after a friend strongly suggested I try Oak Leaf, I bought bottles of Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvingnon. My wife and I were astounded that such an inexpensive wine could taste so well.

      We’ve bought more since.

The wines sell here in AZ for $1.97 – and the Chardonnay is pretty good – passes the #1 criterion for cheap white wine: no aftertaste!

When I first saw the display of the wine for $1.96 I didn’t know if I wanted to take a chance on buying a bad wine, but I decided to buy a case of Chardonnay. When my mother and Ishared the first bottle we really were impressed with the full bodied flavor. The next evening I went back to WalMart and bought four different varieties. It has been the best bargain in quite a while.

I tried the Pinot Grigio/Chardonnay and it is a good bargain and I will try the other types and buy this again. It is hard to beat “Two-Buck Chuck”, but the drive is closer for the Wal-Mart in my area and I think this is very nice for Summer table wine. At this price it will fun to see what the others are like.

Always on the lookout for value wines we found this at the local WalMart. For the price we weren’t concerned if we didn’t like the wine.

The aroma was the best part. It was a simple dark fruit (berry/cherry), but not offputting.

The flavor was just a jammy fruit flavor which diappeared after it hit the taste buds.

Overall this wine rates very poorly against other $2 Chucks that we have tasted and certainly can’t be compared to actual value wines. This is simply a cheap wine that has little flavor and will not offend by having any outstanding qualities.

A SUPRISINGLY GOOD CHEAP WINE!! My husband and I have enjoyed both the Cabernet and the Merlot more than some of the more expensive wines we’ve had. I would buy a case of it if only I could find it. It is rarely on the shelves at Walmart. Can we not call the vinyard and order it ourselves? Any suggestions…anyone?

Oak Leaf Vineyards (Ripon, Calif.) does not really exist as such; instead it is a production facility of The Wine Group, Inc. Oak Leaf wine is the private label non-vintage wine marketed by The Wine Group (the box wine people) only to Wal-Mart stores. (Not E&J Gallo as some reviews contend.)

Headquartered in San Francisco (about 70 miles west of Ripon), The Wine Group’s labels include such well known brands as Corbett Canyon, Inglenook, Mogen David, Franzia, Almaden and Glen Ellen wines. The firm recently relocated their operations center from San Francisco to Livermore, Calif., about mid-way between San Francisco and Ripon.

Privately held, The Wine Group was once part of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of New York. And being privately held, its operation and products are kept pretty much secret. It doesn’t even have a corporate website, although it does have brand-related sites. Strange for the second largest wine producer in California (more than 40 million cases produced annually), second only to Gallo.

Oak Leaf wines are very similar to Bronco’s Charles Shaw wines (affectionately nicknamed “Two Buck Chuck”) which sells for $1.99 at Trader Joe’s stores. Headquartered in Monrovia, Calif., Trader Joe’s 300 stores has sold millions of cases of what the trade calls “extreme value wines.” Due to transportation charges to outlying states, the price can be a dollar more.

The Charles Shaw label is a brand of the Bronco Wine Company (Ceres, Calif.) owned by John and Fred Franzia (formerly of Franzia Brothers wines.) The Franzias (nephews of Ernest Gallo) sold the Franzia brand name to The Wine Group and started Bronco Wines and they are competitors. The Franzia family, which now has no relationship to Franzia brand boxed wine, has made wine in California for over 100 years. Bronco is California’s third largest wine producer.

Oak Leaf Vineyards (which doesn’t even have its own telephone number) is one of hundreds of wine brands bottled by The Wine Group in Ripon. It does not release the private labels of the wines it makes but there are many.

Oak Leaf wines come in five varietals: Cabenet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio/Chardonnay and White Zinfandel. The standard 750-ml bottles with an artificial cork have an elegant label that shows four seasonal oak trees, one for Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

We are not one to place a lot of importance on awards since it seems all wineries get them. But Oak Leaf Vineyards did win a gold medal at the prestigious Florida State International Wine Competition and Silver and Bronze at the 2008 San Francisco Wine Competition. Incredible for a $3 wine! And the Summer-2008 edition of “O at Home” magazine (an Oprah Winfrey publication) featured Oak Leaf wine on its cover with the tag line: “The $3 bottle of wine that will blow you away.” On page 19, they picture Oak Leaf Chardonnay and call it “The steal of the season.”

I like the Cabernet Sauvignon best myself. It is a full favored, medium body wine with a fruity aroma of berry, spice, vanilla and oak …pretty smooth and no unpleasant aftertaste. This is not a sophisticated wine but a terrific value at $2.97.

Wine snobs won’t like it because it is inexpensive and comes from Wal-Mart. But the fact is that it is better than one would expect. I certainly have had $10-$15 French wine far worse. Wal-Mart sells out of it fast, so I buy several bottles whenever they have it. So far, it has been consistently good …a problem with low price wines. (One bottle may be good, the next not so good.) The Oak Leaf brand is perfect for an everyday wine to compliment dine-in dinner and snacks on the patio. Goes with almost anything. I rate it an “80″ out of 100.

I’ve been enjoying this wine since it first landed on Walley World shelves. Very, very wonderful Merlot…… sometimes. HOWEVER, use cation, I did find recently that there are certain batches of Oak Leaf Merlot that are absolutely horrible. Since there’s no way to identify one batch from another…. this presents a challenge. It’s a little bit like playing the lottery now, question becomes…… do you feel lucky?

i am drinking some right now. i gave the aroma a “6″ only b/c it kinda does have an offputting smell. not sure what that smell is but i only notice it when i am drinking the merlot (as i am now). the wally’s here always has plenty in stock (raleigh, nc triangle area) and i have become a wine snob lately however i totally dig this wine for the nights i am sipping alone or with my hubby. goes VERY well with red meats as i grilled burgers today.

8 out of 10 and this has been our cheaper alternative for awhile now.

Um…embarrassing for me but not for the wine! After getting a bottle each in our stockings for Christmas, my wife and I were so impressed but worried Walmart might run out, we went and bought 58 bottles of the cabernet. Now, everytime we pass the wine aisle and see that the wine is still in stock, we pick up an additional case or so! First time ever that our wine rack has been full! Great everyday wine. Good for the heart? Definitely great for the soul and the pocketbook!

I was given a bottle of the Oak Leaf cab by a friend who had bought too much wine for a party. I was REALLY surprised, I had no idea that it was such an inexpensive bottle. Fantastic! I will by this if I see it anywhere. However I don’t recommend giving it as a gift because it’s truly cheap. Use it in sangria for a party or a daily dose of that needed red wine.
        good stuff.

Forget the price and enjoy the wine. I especially like the Oak
Leaf Cabernet and the Shiraz. I truly hope that the wine “snobs”
will continue to shun the wine – that will leave more for those of
us who enjoy wine for the quality, not for how much it costs.
I know many people who will not buy clothing from Walwart
because they think it is cheap and the same can be said for the
wine. They don’t know what they are missing!!

This is the first time I have purchased the Oak Leaf wine.
I opened it up and put it in the refrigerator with the spout out.
The next day when I opened the frig the wine has leaked and
my frig was red . . . the first thing I checked was the spout and it
was turned all the way off.
It took me an hour to clean all this mess up. I managed to pour
the wine into some bottles that I had.
I do not know how much wine was spilled. I had used it only
the one time, using about four glasses of wine.
I purchased the Oak Leaf Cabernet Sauvignon at Walmart and
        the code is 83121 00181.

Over the past 11 months, we have purchased in excess of 24 cases. We too, have also missed the Shiraz. We have also purchased the Oak Leaf box wines and have been pleasantly surprised of the same quality. As stated by others, we continue
to keep our household supply up. In fact, added another 60 bottle
rack. The Pinot Grigio has an excellent flavor and is our favorite.
The Cab and Shiraz are incredibly good. The word seems to be spreading and the stock is limited. C’mon Walmart, keep us happy!!!

I am having a glass of the Oak Leaf Shiraz now. When I see it at Walmart I purchase all that they have on the shelf. The Shiraz seems to be in short supply. I also enjoy the Cab and the Pinot G. Tried the Chardonnay and it was good but I prefer red. I have not tried the Merlot yet. I am not a Merlot fan but for the price I think I will pick it up next time. The Merlot and the Chardonnay are the most plentiful at our Walmart. I sometimes have to wait for Shiraz, Cab and Pinot G. I have not tried the Zinfindel yet either but have a bottle chilling.

i have purchased several bottles and boxes of the Oak Leaf Chardonnay at Wallmart in San Antonio, Texas. I think the flavor is excellent and comparable to more expensive wines. However, the last two boxes i purchase, (one was last week and one yesterday 9-13-09) was an awful dark yellow color and the taste was way off. I know it has to just be a problem with a few boxes as all the others have been great. Because of the laws, wallmart could not give me credit for the two boxes and i am very dissapointed. Please contact me at 210-651-9659 and send me a refund so i can purchase more of your wine. Also please check your box wine, the code info is 00609 05:22R21 (this was on the box i bought 9-13) Thank you

Although today I found the 3L box of Oak Leaf White Zin for only 4.97! I thought it was a mistake, so I asked a sales lady, and it truly was only 4.97….. usually sells for 9.97! For that price, I for sure don’t mind my wine in a box!

The Cabernet Sauvignon was a bit “jammy” at first, but after the 2nd bottle, it’s fine. I used to buy only wines rated a 90 or higher by Wine Spectator, but now, since i enjoy my wine daily, price is certainly a factor, and this brand is cheaper than Crane Lake, which is actually one of my favorites now! Oak Leaf is a viable solution for people seeking a decent Cabernet at a low price! I haven’t tried their other varietals, just the Cabernet.

Today I bought a box of Oak Leaf Vineyards Cabernet at WalMart in Evendale, Ohio. I brought it home, opened it, poured a glass and what do you know, I gagged. It is without a doubt the worst tasting liquid I’ve put in my mouth in many a year with perhaps the exception of soured milk. I called WalMart and they won’t take it back so now I’ve spent twelve bucks on crap I can’t drink. I won’t gve up drinking red wine, but I won’t be drinking Oak Leaf and you can bet I won’t be setting foot into a WalMart any time soon.

Today I bought a box of Oak Leaf Vineyards Cabernet at WalMart in Denver, NC. I brought it home, opened it, poured a glass and what do you know, We LOVED it!! It is without a doubt the BEST tasting liquid I’ve put in my mouth in many a year! I called WalMart to “thank them” for providing us “connoisseur’s” a great tasting wine! You can bet I will be setting foot into WalMart for all of my Vino needs!

        Sorry Bob……

I have enjoyed the boxed Cabe for sometime & found it to be a good wine for the price. The last box, however, was particularly bitter & when I examined the plastic bag, its interior was covered in a heavy sludge unlike anything I’ve seen before. The numbers under the sell date on the box (Jul 24, 2010) were: 11409 02:47R1.

I never drunk wine before and this stuff is gooood. I made a steak dinner for the wife and myself and opened up a bottle of the merlot and wow, what great taste. We are going shopping again next week and I will be picking up more and bottles. I chilled the merlot in the frige so it had a nice chill that went well with my spicey steak.
Anyone out there can help me understand when to drink wine with certain food.
Like I had steak will the red merlot, so I heard that white wine is for seafood. Any one can help?

Good wine for the price, I am a true believer in wine now.

Bought my first at Walmart 10-01-09 for $5.97 for 3 liters. Experation date was 09-30-09 and thought it had been reduced. Thought it was not that far over the experation date and took a chance. Didn’t know it was cheap anyway. I ended up pouring it down the kitchen sink drain.

It can be either. My father in law uses it for cooking from time to time then when he is done we all normally drink it. Everyone likes it. I like the whites slightly chilled, reds about 75 degrees or so. Standard alcohol i think around 13% or so

I admit up front that I don’t know wines at all. I don’t drink wine very much, and I only cook with it occasionally.

I was at Wal-Mart last week, and had purchased a bottle of Pinot Grigio because the shelf with the cooking wine was out of white.

Tonight, I saw the bottle sitting in the pantry, and wanted to taste it. I didn’t know what to expect, though I feared it would be sharp and bitter because of the price. it was such a surprise to have it be a mild wine. I’m drinking some right now, and very pleased with it. Eating a little German chocolate with it. Delightful.

I will be offering this wine to my married children to try, and I will be trying the other varieties. I’m delighted in the happy accident that brought this wine my way.

The Oak Leaf Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, for only $2.99, WOW!

Do not get me wrong, there are numerous better Cabernet Sauvignons out there, but not for under $5.

Make sure you let it breathe for a good 15 minutes, but I promise you will be pleasantly surprised of how good this really is, especially since this can only be bought at Wal-Mart.

I too was skeptical when I came across the $2.97 bottles of wine in Walmart. After all, what do Walmart patrons know about wine? I was merely looking for can of spray paint to touch up some lawn furniture. No, I am not a wine snob. Wow! I was wrong — and maybe on both counts. I find the Oak Leaf cabernet to be excellent, and the shiraz to be a little lacking in flavor but still very good. And at less than $3 per bottle. Unbelievable. I just hope too many people don’t find out about it. Haaah!

finally we can have a glass of wine with our dinner every night and don’t have to have a separate wine budget!

Yesterday I happened to be in Walmat price checking a portable memory and on impulse bought a bottle of Oak Tree Cabernet Sauvignon for 2.98. This is a nasty wine. In fact I wonder if it’s even made out of grapes. It’s undrinkable. It recalls years ago when the Italians were caught producing Chiati out of pig’s blood, alcohol and water. I suspect the folks giving it acceptable ratings are shills for the winery, or for Walmart!

        Wow,
not sure what happened here. I have been a loyal fan of 2-buck chuck, and feel that their cab is decent. However, the OAK leaf that I tried last night, is horrible. I am wondering if there has been a recent change of quality from when others have posted, or if I just received a bad bottle. Are all the corks made of foam? My wine tasted like foam!! It had a rancid taste, and very bitter. There was another hint of weird aftertaste, which may be the oak-barrel??? I am really wanting a good local solution for a cheap table wine. Maybe I will try the Merlot

I have been drinking the Oak Leaf Pinot Grigio for about three years. I think it is a wonderful wine regardless of price. Last week I traveled the 130 miles to our nearest Walmart to restock. I purchased 12 bottles of what I thought was The Pinot and returned home. When I took the first sip I knew something was wrong or at least very different. Looking at the label I read Pinot Grigio in black but above it in gold was printed Chenin Blanc. Is this now a combination wine. If so, the combination is not a good one, at least for dedicated Pinot Grigio fans. Does anyone know what is going on? The price is $2.97 here in FL but I paid $3.47 in the U.P. of Michigan. I would rather pay the $3.47 and have just Pinot. What is going on?

I tried it a while back and thought “what do I have to lose?” At $1.97 a bottle I bought one of each. Not bad for a two dollar wine. Good for a table wine. Not bad for watching TV and drinking. I just had two glasses of Cabernet and I like it. It has gone up in price to $2.97 a bottle but it’s still a good wine value. My son-in-law works at a high class winery in Oregon and the best wine I have ever tasted from them is $85/bottle. They have more expensive wines (up tp $150/bottle) that aren’t as good as this stuff as far as my uncomplicated taste buds are concerend. It is MUCH better than this stuff but I can afford this stuff and it isn’t that bad.

I discovered the Oak Leaf Chard about a year ago for $2.97. I bought a couple of bottles and was absolutely delighted with the flavor for such a cheap price. Many have said that (1) the wine in the boxes is terrible and (2) they occasionally get a “bad batch” in both the bottles and the boxes. I haven’t tried any Oak Leaf other than the Chard, but have never gotten a bad bottle or box. I frequently buy and serve the Card in the box and my guests have never complained. Rather they have complemented the great flavor of the wine. I’m enjoying a glass of the Chard from the box right now as I post this and am completely satisfied that this wine is as good as any I’ve tasted.

Folks, I love wal-mart and shop there all the time. I understand that not everyone can afford $15 buck for a bottle of wine but that’s life. I’ve tried all the Oak Leaf Cab wines and they all &#@&. If you want a decent bottle of wind you’re gonna have pay at least $15 for a bottle. If you ever taste a really good wine you’ll never be able to drink this stuff. On the bright side…after 2 glasses it makes no difference…LOL.

We first encountered Oak Leaf when on an extended trip to Myrtle Beach last winter. We drink wine just about every day with dinner, and are usually happy to find a bottle back home for less than $9 (most often Italian, Chilean or Spanish). So you can imagine our reaction when we saw this big display at Walmart for $2.97. First reaction: it must be horrible wine (and being bargain hunters we have had our share of that!) Second reaction: we’ll only be out 3 bucks if it’s bad. So we tried one (can’t remember the varietal) and were amazed. Realizing the impact this would have on our wine budget for the month and afraid it was just a clearance sale, we ran back to the store the next day and picked up more, then a few days later for more, and so on…. We introduced it to family and friends who were down for a few days, and everyone enjoyed it and couldn’t believe the price.
I was happy to find it also in Maine last summer, and was glad to see our familiar shelf at the Myrtle Beach Superstore well stocked again this year, still at the amazing 2.97 price. We wish we could get this wine in Canada!

I enjoy Oak Leaf Chardonnay and Shiraz. The Merlot & Cabernet are a little weak tasting, but not bad. I buy the Chard. by the box and it tastes the same as bottles to me. I have been disappointed for last couple of months that the Walmarts in Charleston, SC no longer carry the Chadonnay in boxes. They sold well, does anybody know why the boxes are not being restocked?
